I have been practicing yoga at Yoga On York for almost 10 years. When I started, I had recently moved to Maine from New York City, where I had an incredible yoga teacher and impossibly high standards for what a yoga studio should provide. After trying almost 10 different studios within a generous radius from my house, including several in Portland, I finally found Yoga On York. Since I live in Kennebunkport it takes me 35 minutes to get to the studio–but there is no substitute, and I gratefully make the drive at least three times a week.
Rae and Jeff–and their highly skilled, well-trained group of instructors–have an authentic, palpable commitment to quality. They offer a depth of knowledge, a range of teaching styles, and a genuine devotion to individual growth. They never just go through the motions (and won’t let you either!). They have created more than just a studio; they have created a community that is safe, supportive, and encouraging. When I leave a class my body has strengthened, my shoulders have relaxed, my voice has deepened, my mind has calmed. I once read that going to yoga is the gym, therapy and church all wrapped into one; Yoga on York achieves this trifecta for me every time.

I can’t tell you what an impact Yoga On York had on me this summer. Not only do I find the practice of yoga a good fit for me, I firmly believe that starting with you as my teachers made the whole experience so….perfect. You have a good balance of knowing when to motivate to go deeper, but also to know when to support when one has reached their limit. You will be happy to know I had my whole family doing the pigeon pose after dinner! Athletics is a very big part of our lives and I want my children to start to see the benefits of yoga in relation to the sports they love to play. Thanks you so much.

Something about the stretching, strength and relaxation I got just a hint of in my first yoga class three years ago kept me coming back. Before I knew it, I was looking forward to every class and wishing I could fit more into my schedule. The studio is comfortable and welcoming place for beginners and practiced students alike. I appreciate the efforts that Rae and Jeff go to make Yoga On York a non-competitive, personalized, and casual place to come. Their style is professional, yet friendly and light-hearted. When they say yoga is for everyone, they truly mean it.
As a woman over 55, I had issues with upper body strength (and osteoporosis in the family history) and my goal was simply to see a little improvement. Not only have I been able to feel the changes in my posture and core strength, my balance, range of motion and general well being have also improved tremendously. I am delighted to have found Yoga On York and look forward to a life long practice.
I found YOGA ON YORK when a friend “dragged” me there about 3 weeks after they opened back in 2002. I had just gone through a life changing experience that left me emotionally and physically drained. I have been hooked every since. Yoga really gave me my life back in so many ways. It has incredible physical and emotional benefits. Yoga class is about you and you can work as hard or as easy as you want.
The other reason why I love YOGA ON YORK is Rae and Jeff. They are phenomenal instructors with tons of experience and knowledge. The best thing about Rae and Jeff is that they have a young family and understand our busy lives. They obviously love what they do and it shows. Their classes are amazing and you ALWAYS leave feeling better.
I have just started classes at Yoga on York, and LOVE it! Sage is such a great instructor, and I really appreciate her calm and yet encouraging demeanor. What has most inspired me about beginning yoga has been the realization that the hour or so of class is ‘purposeful’ time that I carve out of my day– for ME and my health! There is nothing else, but being in the present moment, and it is unbelievable how much I appreciate that.
My husband and I had the opportunity to stay in York for 10 days in the fall of 2006. As usual when I travel, I immediately started looking for a yoga studio. When I took classes from both Rae and Jeff, I was in heaven. They are absolutely incredible instructors who create a practice that invigorates, challenges, while remaining spiritual and peaceful. And I have a lot to compare to having sought out top studios when I visit Manhattan, Boston, Santa Fe, Los Angeles, London and Buenos Aires. I simply haven’t found anyone that compares to Rae and Jeff – they simply have the practice I enjoy more than any other I’ve ever done. I wish they would relocate to San Francisco, but of course, they won’t – so the residents and visitors of York are very fortunate.

I practiced at Yoga On York through a Maine winter and must admit, I don’t think I could have survived it without them! I tried a number of studios in the area before settling on YOY’s flexibility and quality. The teachers there have backgrounds in massage therapy, occupational therapy, and sports, making them highly attuned to the body as well as the postures. I walked away with a better understanding of the workings of each asana – and will be a “smarter yogi” wherever I practice from now on . Jeff, Rae Lynn, and the other teachers are also funny and very welcoming. I cannot recommend Yoga On York enough to anyone looking for yoga in Southern Maine.
